The role, relationship and current goal do most of the work. Appearance matters only when the scene will use it. Avoid telling the persona how the AI character should speak; that belongs in the character definition.

“I’m Alex, a remote designer who likes quiet evening conversations. I use gentle humor, prefer direct questions and want practical encouragement rather than exaggerated praise.” This gives the conversation a stable tone without inventing a plot.

Slow-burn roleplay

“I’m Rowan, the new archivist assigned to Captain Vale. We distrust each other after a failed expedition, but we must decode the same journal before winter.” The relationship contains tension and a shared reason to continue.

Adventure protagonist

“I’m Nia, an apprentice navigator who can read storm marks but cannot use magic. I promised to reach the lighthouse before dawn and I hide one broken compass.” The limitation and unfinished promise generate choices.

Diagnose a persona that is not working

Change one variable at a time. Editing the name, relationship, goal and style together tells you nothing about which change helped.

Run a three-message acceptance test

Ask one neutral identity question, one relationship question and one scene question. For example: “What should you call me?”, “Why are we working together?” and “What problem are we solving tonight?” Score the answers for identity, relationship, goal and tone.
