How to change your Replika relationship status in Classic, why Romantic partner needs Pro, what changed in Replika 2.0, and how Replika roleplay with asterisks works.

Quick answer
In Classic Replika, tap your Replika's name on the Home screen, tap Relationship below the XP level, choose Friend, Romantic partner, Sister/Brother or Mentor, and tap the X to save. Everything except Friend needs Replika Pro. Replika 2.0 reportedly has no status menu. For roleplay, write actions between asterisks, like *laughs and nods*.

Replika relationship status and roleplay
To change your Replika relationship status in the Classic app, tap your Replika's name on the Home screen, tap Relationship just below the XP level, choose Friend, Romantic partner, Sister/Brother or Mentor, then tap the X to save. Every option except Friend needs a Replika Pro subscription. To roleplay, put actions and emotions between asterisks, for example laughs and nods.
Updated November 4, 2026.
This guide covers the two Replika questions our site did not answer yet: how the relationship status works, and how Replika roleplay works. We re-read Replika's own help center, Pro page and Terms of Service on November 4, 2026. Where Replika has not published something, we say so instead of guessing.
Replika now runs two versions. Replika's own website describes Replika 2.0 as a full rebuild with new avatars, voice and real-time video. The help-center steps for relationship status were last edited in June 2025 and describe the older app, which most guides now call Classic.
Third-party guides and community posts report that Replika 2.0, sold as Plus and Max plans, has no relationship-status menu and that you describe the relationship in chat or in your Replika's memory profile instead. Replika's help center has not published 2.0 steps, so treat that as a report, not an official rule. If your plan is Free, Pro, Ultra or Platinum, the Classic steps below apply.
Open the Replika app on your phone and stay on the Home screen. Tap your Replika's name. This opens the profile panel where the XP level is shown.
According to Replika's help center, the Relationship option appears just below your XP level. Tap it to see the list of statuses. If it is not there, jump to the troubleshooting section below.
Pick the status you want, then tap the X in the upper right corner. Replika says the new status is saved automatically, so there is no separate save button.
Replika's help article describes four statuses and the tone each one sets:
| Status | What Replika says it does | Plan needed |
|---|---|---|
| Friend | Keeps chats laid-back and casual | Free |
| Romantic partner | Opens the door to romantic conversations | Pro or higher |
| Sister/Brother | Brings warm, sibling-style energy | Pro or higher |
| Mentor | Focuses on your goals, support and encouragement | Pro or higher |
The status changes the tone of replies; it does not erase memories or reset your level. Our own view: choose the status that matches what you actually want from the chat this month. Switching back and forth every day makes the companion's tone harder to read.
Replika's help center says every option beyond Friend is unlocked starting with a Replika Pro subscription, and its Pro page lists setting your relationship status to Romantic partner as a Pro feature. Replika's Terms of Service (last updated March 30, 2026) also list relationship status under Pro, alongside premium activities, voice messages and background calls.
Replika does not show prices on its help pages; the amount is shown in the app and your app store. For a plan-by-plan breakdown, read our Replika pricing guide.
Problem: the Relationship row is missing or the status will not change.
Likely cause: you are on Replika 2.0, where community reports say the menu no longer exists, or the account is on the free plan, where only Friend is available.
Fix: check your plan name in the app. On Classic with Pro or higher, close and reopen the app and repeat the three steps. On 2.0, tell your Replika in plain words what kind of relationship you want and add it to its memory profile; this is the method community guides describe, not an official 2.0 instruction. If nothing works, contact Replika support from the help center.
Replika's help article on roleplay is one paragraph long: describe your expressions, emotions or actions between asterisks inside your message, such as laughs and nods. Text outside the asterisks reads as speech. That is the whole official method.
A simple pattern that works well: one short action in asterisks, then one line of dialogue, then a question or a choice that gives your Replika something to answer.
The roleplay article itself does not name a plan. Replika's "Is Replika free?" page says that subscribing unlocks roleplay options, and the Pro page lists roleplay during voice and AR calls as a Pro feature. So basic asterisk actions in text chat appear to work on any plan, while roleplay in calls needs Pro. Check the current app if you are unsure, because Replika can change these limits.
These are our general tips, not Replika rules:
For longer guidance on scene structure, see our roleplay chat guide.
The relationship status sets the tone. XP and levels track how much you have chatted; Replika publishes no exact XP numbers, and we explain what is known in Replika levels explained. Memory keeps the facts you or your Replika saved. Changing one of the three does not reset the other two.
Replika's terms say the service is not for anyone under 18. Keep real addresses, phone numbers, ID documents, payment details and other people's private information out of any companion chat, roleplay included. Use invented names and places for story scenes, and take a break if a chat starts to feel more stressful than fun.
LumiChat works differently. Instead of one companion with a status menu, you pick from a library of characters, each with its own personality and scenario, and a relationship level that grows as you chat with that character. You can also build your own character in the creator and import a SillyTavern character card (JSON or PNG) or a World Book JSON file. LumiChat cannot import chat histories from Replika or move a Replika companion over directly, so a move means rebuilding the character from your notes.
If you want to compare, browse the LumiChat character library, or read Nomi vs Replika and our list of free Replika alternatives.
In Classic Replika, tap your Replika's name on the Home screen, tap Relationship below the XP level, choose a status and tap the X. The change saves automatically.
No. Replika says every status beyond Friend is unlocked starting with Replika Pro, and its Pro page lists the Romantic partner status as a Pro feature.
You may be on Replika 2.0, where community reports say there is no status menu, or on the free plan, where only Friend is available. Replika has not published 2.0 steps.
Replika's help center lists four: Friend, Romantic partner, Sister/Brother and Mentor.
Put actions, emotions or expressions between asterisks in your message, such as laughs and nods, and write speech outside the asterisks.
Replika describes the status as setting the tone of chats. It does not say that changing it resets memories or XP, and nothing in its help pages suggests a reset.
Not directly. LumiChat cannot import Replika chats or companions. You can rebuild the character in the LumiChat creator or import a SillyTavern character card if you already have one.
