Quick answer
Janitor AI does not offer a built-in character-card export or download button in its public help docs or character editor as of November 6, 2026, so the reliable way to import Janitor AI characters to SillyTavern is to copy the fields you own (or have explicit permission to reuse) into a notes file, then Create New Character or Import Character in SillyTavern.

Janitor AI to SillyTavern import
Janitor AI does not offer a built-in character-card export or download button in its public help docs or character editor as of November 6, 2026, so the reliable way to import Janitor AI characters to SillyTavern is to copy the fields you own (or have explicit permission to reuse) into a notes file, then Create New Character or Import Character in SillyTavern.
Updated November 6, 2026.
This step-by-step guide explains how to import Janitor AI characters to SillyTavern without scraping other people's bots. It covers the honest manual path, what to do if you already have a PNG or JSON card, common SillyTavern import errors, and how the same card can later be imported into LumiChat. For broader tavern-style chat options, see our AI tavern chat guide and the best AI tavern chat platforms roundup.
Short answer: no official one-click export. Janitor AI's public help center character-creation guides do not describe an "export character," "download card," or similar button. Community character-card sites also note that Janitor has no download button for bots. Treat that as a product fact for this guide: you will move definitions by hand, or import a SillyTavern-compatible file you already control.
Janitor's Terms say users retain ownership of their User Content, subject to a license granted to JanitorAI. Ownership of your own writing does not create a download feature; it means you can reuse what you created, within the platform rules and copyright rules below.
Only move characters you created yourself, or characters where the creator gave you clear permission to reuse the definition elsewhere. Janitor's Copyrighted Content help article (updated December 4, 2026 on the help site) states that unauthorized reproduction or redistribution of bots created by other users is not permitted, that credit does not replace clear permission, and that porting characters from external platforms without authorization is prohibited.
Do not scrape private or hidden definitions. Do not work around a creator's hide-definitions choice. If you are unsure whether you have permission, stop and ask the creator in writing before you copy anything into SillyTavern.
If you are still choosing a tavern-style frontend, compare options in Tavern AI 2 before you invest time in a migration.
Open Janitor AI, go to your character list, and open the character you own in the editor. From Janitor's character creation overview, the fields that matter for a move are Character Name, Character Chat Name, Personality (required β the main bot info), Scenario, Initial Message (first message), Example Dialogs (often kept inside Personality), and the avatar image. Character Bio is display-only on Janitor and is not used in chat, so treat it as optional flavor rather than core prompt text.
If the editor shows definitions as hidden to the public, that only affects other users' view. For characters you own, you should still see your own fields while editing. If you cannot see the definition because you are not the creator, you do not have a legitimate export path β see the hidden-definition section below.
Create a notes file with clear labels and paste each field once. A practical template:
Copy carefully. Do not rewrite mid-copy; you can refine after SillyTavern imports cleanly. Save the avatar image separately if you want the same portrait in SillyTavern.
SillyTavern's character docs list a Character Management panel with Create New Character, Import Character (from file), and External Import (from URL). Content fields include Character Description, First Message, and Alternative greetings. Advanced fields include Personality Summary, Scenario, Example Messages, Creator notes, and more.
Use this mapping for a manual move:
| Janitor field | SillyTavern field |
|---|---|
| Character Name / Chat Name | Name (and display name if your build separates them) |
| Personality | Character Description (and/or Personality Summary) |
| Scenario | Scenario |
| Initial Message | First Message |
| Example Dialogs | Example Messages |
| Creator notes / your extra notes | Creator notes |
Personality is the main bot info on Janitor, so it usually belongs in Description first. If Description gets too long for your model context, move a short summary into Personality Summary and keep details in Description or a lorebook entry later.
In SillyTavern, open the Characters panel and choose Create New Character. Paste Name, Description, First Message, Scenario, Example Messages, and any Advanced fields from your notes. Add the avatar if you saved one. Save, then start a short test chat: send one greeting reply and check that the first message, scenario, and personality all feel intact.
If the replies ignore key traits, the most common cause is a truncated Description or Example Messages that contradict Personality. Fix the notes file first, then edit the character again.
If you already have a SillyTavern-compatible PNG or JSON card of your own character, skip the paste path. Open the Characters panel, choose Import Character, or drag the file onto the SillyTavern window. Prefer files you exported from a tool you control, not files pulled from someone else's private bot.
After import, open the character and confirm Description, First Message, and Advanced fields. Re-save if your SillyTavern version asks you to upgrade the card format.
SillyTavern also supports External Import from a URL when you already host a card file you own. Use this only for URLs you control and for characters you are allowed to reuse. External Import is not a Janitor feature and does not pull bots straight from Janitor AI.
Creators can hide definitions on Janitor. Hidden or private definitions are a clear stop sign for anyone who is not the owner. There is no legitimate reveal workaround in this guide. Ask the creator for permission and for a copy they are willing to share as a card or as text. If they refuse, pick another character or create your own.
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| PNG import fails | Image has no embedded definitions (re-saved and stripped metadata) | Import a JSON card instead, or re-export a real character PNG from a tool that embeds the card |
| PNG import fails | File is actually WEBP misnamed as .png | Rename to .webp, or obtain a real PNG card |
| Import succeeds but chat feels empty | Description or First Message was blank in the source file | Open the character editor and paste from your notes |
| External Import fails | URL is blocked, expired, or not a card file | Download the file yourself if you own it, then use Import Character from file |
| Traits missing after manual paste | Personality was left only in Creator notes | Move the main Personality text into Description |
SillyTavern's FAQ explicitly calls out the missing-metadata PNG case and the WEBP-named-as-PNG case. Those two fix most "card will not import" reports.
Community tools and mirrors (browser extensions, third-party galleries, GitHub extractors, and sites such as jannyai-style mirrors) exist and claim to help move Janitor bots. Mentioning them is not a recommendation. They are unofficial, may conflict with Janitor's Terms that expect access through official means, and must never be used on characters whose definitions are hidden or that you do not own or have permission for. For your own characters, the manual copy path above is the safer primary method.
A character card is not a full account backup. Janitor lorebooks, scripts, and chat histories do not travel automatically when you paste fields or import a card. If you need world info on SillyTavern, rebuild entries there or import a World Info / lorebook file you own; our SillyTavern lorebook and World Info guide and Janitor AI lorebook guide cover those pieces separately. Past chats stay on the original platform unless that platform offers its own export, which this guide does not claim for Janitor character cards.
Once you have a SillyTavern-compatible PNG or JSON card, you can import that card into LumiChat. LumiChat's character creator at /app/create accepts SillyTavern character cards in JSON and PNG (up to 8 MB) and can import World Book JSON. LumiChat cannot import chat histories and cannot pull characters directly from Janitor AI or other platforms. There is no direct Janitor-to-LumiChat import; the path is Janitor fields (or an existing card) β SillyTavern card or notes β LumiChat card import.
For the LumiChat-specific steps, follow how to import SillyTavern character cards, then browse the LumiChat character library if you want ready-made characters while you rebuild your own.
No. As of November 6, 2026, Janitor AI's public help docs and character editor do not offer a built-in character-card export or download button.
Open your character in the Janitor editor, copy Personality, Scenario, Initial Message, Example Dialogs, and the name into a notes file, then Create New Character in SillyTavern and paste into Description, First Message, Scenario, and Example Messages.
Only with clear creator permission. Unauthorized reproduction or redistribution of other users' bots is not permitted under Janitor's Copyrighted Content rules, and credit is not a substitute for permission.
Common causes are a PNG with no embedded definitions after a re-save, or a WEBP file misnamed as .png. Use a real embedded PNG, rename WEBP correctly, or import JSON instead.
No. Cards and pasted fields move character definition text. Lorebooks and chat histories need separate handling and are not part of a Janitor card export, because Janitor has no built-in card export.
No. LumiChat cannot pull directly from Janitor and cannot import chat histories. Import a SillyTavern PNG or JSON card into LumiChat after you have one.
Treat unofficial extractors and mirrors as community tools, not the recommended path. They may conflict with Janitor's Terms, and you must not use them on hidden definitions or on characters you do not own or have permission to reuse.
